In the past, tiles were paved using cement, whereas nowadays, tile adhesive is predominantly used for this purpose. So, what is the difference between cement and tile adhesive, and what are their advantages?

1. Different construction methods

Cement-based tile (wall tile) is usually installed using the back-buttering method, which involves applying mortar to the back of the tile before attaching it to the wall. Tile adhesive is typically applied using the notched trowel method, where a toothed scraper is used to spread the mixed tile adhesive evenly in a striped pattern on the wall, and then the clean tile is pressed onto it. Avoiding the back-to-back method can prevent uneven distribution of cement mortar, which may lead to issues such as hollowing and tile falling off in the later stages.

2. Different pasting effects

Ceramic tile adhesive is a professional material for tiling, with a bonding strength more than three times that of cement and sand. Therefore, after tiling, it is less prone to cracking, hollowing, and detachment.

3. The thickness of the bonding is different

When using cement to affix small-sized tiles, the thickness of the cement is generally around 15 millimeters. When affixing slightly larger tiles, the thickness of the cement can exceed 20 millimeters or even be thicker. For tiles affixed with tile adhesive, the thickness of the bonding layer is usually between 3 to 5 millimeters, and small-sized tiles can even be affixed securely with a thickness of only 1.8 millimeters.

4. Is it necessary to soak the tiles

When tiling with cement, it is usually necessary to soak the tiles in advance to facilitate a better bond between the back of the tiles and the cement. The bonding strength of tile adhesive can reach three times that of cement, allowing tiles to be firmly attached to the wall without soaking the tiles.

Advantages of tile adhesive

1. The construction process is straightforward, eliminating the need for pre-soaking the tiles. When applying tile adhesive, a thin layer is all that's needed, which also conserves space for cement application.

2. Tile adhesive has strong adhesion. Compared to tiling with cement, tiling with tile adhesive has higher bonding strength, resulting in fewer instances of hollowing or detachment.

3. Tile adhesive causes less pollution. When using tile adhesive, only a thin layer is needed, reducing the generation of waste materials. It contains no toxic additives and meets the requirements of green environmental protection.
